Mississippi Freedom Trail

The latest effort by the State of Mississippi in developing their trails program is the Mississippi Freedom Trail, a major cultural initiative designed to commemorate the state’s Civil Rights heritage. The trail offers a tour sites in the state that played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement.

Once again the Mississippi Development Authority/Tourism Division selected Hammons and Associates to design and execute this project. The project began with the creation of a new identity for the Freedom Trail. From there H&A created a prototype marker and participated in the overall planning effort. MDA wanted the Freedom Trail on a fast track in order to have the first four markers ready for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Rides, and H&A created invitations, banners and programs to accompany those unveiling ceremonies.
Thirty markers have already been installed and others are scheduled for installation.
